Based in Nelson, BC, Somerson Design Build specializes in custom Step 5 homes designed for exceptional energy efficiency, comfort, and durability. Since completing Nelson’s first Step 5 home in 2019, the company has focused exclusively on building high-performance homes that combine thoughtful design with lasting craftsmanship.

Head of Operations
Jeb Whiteside
Born in Toronto, Jeb moved to the Kootenays in 1996 and settled in Nelson in 2005. After graduating from Selkirk College’s fine woodworking program, he and his father built their first home in 2010. He later shifted from guiding to building high-efficiency custom homes. In 2019, they completed Nelson’s first Step 5 home, and since then every project has met or exceeded Step 5 standards, often including solar, geothermal, and battery backup systems.
Financial
Barry Whiteside
With a background in urban and regional planning, Barry has spent over 40 years building homes across Canada. After moving to Nelson, he partnered with his son in 2010 to build their first home together. Over time, he shifted toward smaller, high-efficiency projects, helping deliver Nelson’s first Step 5 home in 2019. Barry now manages administration and project finances, ensuring every build stays on budget and meets or exceeds Step 5 standards.
Site Supervisor/Lead Carpenter
Nigel Martin
Born in Victoria, British Columbia, Nigel gained hands-on building experience early on, including working alongside his father. A Red Seal carpenter, he moved to Nelson in 2008 and joined the Somerson team in 2011. Nigel brings extensive knowledge and problem-solving skills to custom, high-efficiency builds, helping ensure every project meets the team’s high standards for quality and performance.

Every home we build includes an advanced smart ventilation system designed to continuously monitor and improve indoor air quality. It brings in fresh, filtered air while removing stale air, allergens, and excess humidity. Integrated sensors detect changes in air quality and automatically adjust airflow as needed, creating a healthier and more comfortable living environment. The system also recovers energy from outgoing air to improve heating and cooling efficiency, helping maintain year-round comfort while reducing energy consumption.
